Mount Royal Hosts Alberta-Wide Model UN

Model UN

The Department of Policy Studies was pleased to host the 18th Alberta Intercollegiate Model United Nations Conference from February 28 to March 2, 2014. Organized by Professor Kari Roberts, the event was sponsored by the Faculty of Arts and the Department of Policy Studies. Over 90 delegates, representing 35 countries, attended; they came from Mount Royal University, the University of Calgary, Red Deer College, Grant MacEwan University, Concordia University and Grande Prairie Regional College. Delegates discussed issues relating to the principle of Universal Jurisdiction. Much of the debate centred on the International Criminal Court and the best way for the international community to address and punish the perpetrators of grave breaches of human rights. Award winning participants included Gavin Marshak from the University of Calgary who was named Best Delegate; Heath Milo of Mount Royal (representing the USA) and Leah Schmidt of the University of Calgary (representing the Democratic Republic of Congo) who were judged as having the Best Opening Speech; and Cora Carter and Krystal Northey of Mount Royal (representing Canada) and Patrick Jones and Davina Basse, of the University of Calgary (representing Russia) who were awarded Best Delegation. Special thanks go to the following Policy Studies students for their invaluable assistance with the execution of the conference: Cassidy McGraw, Nicole Pepin, Jeong Chun Lee, Brady Pember, Alex Wright, and Kristine Littman.
